HISTORIC IMPRESSIONS
The house: Circa 1913- Keron J. Holland

This American Foursquare was built in 1912 for local dentist, Dr. Keron J. Holland. Like many homes in the Cathedral Area, this house was converted into a multi-unit rental property. New homeowners Karl and Rebecca Darley purchased this home last year and have restored it to a single family, four bedroom home.

While undertaking such a project can seem overwhelming, the Darley’s say that the process is manageable and rewarding. They have preserved the original leaded glass window features throughout the house, as well as the built-in cabinets in the living room. They have restored the oak woodwork, refinished the hardwood floors, remodeled the upstairs bathroom, and custom built a replacement parson’s bench that had been removed years ago.

While retaining many of the home’s original features is important, it was also necessary to update certain elements. The kitchen area was originally divided into several smaller rooms. By opening up the floor plan, the Darley’s were able to not only create a much more practical kitchen area, but they were also able to add a bathroom on the first floor.

An interesting side note to this property is that the original owner, Dr. Holland passed away in his favorite room of the house. Several subsequent residents attest to hearing and seeing Dr. Holland’s ghost on several occasions. Also, this home will be on the market after the Housewalk…..ghost included at no extra charge.
