HISTORIC IMPRESSIONS
The house: Circa 1910_ Charles J. Lasker

An example of the Dutch Colonial style, Michael and Jillian Sawyer’s home was built around 1910 by a local bronze molder named Charles Lasker. The home features a large front porch, original built-in window seats, decorative columns, beautiful wood floors, and a brick fireplace.

Renovations include an updated kitchen, finished basement, new windows, restoration of the detached garage, and several landscaping projects. While working on the landscaping, old bricks were found buried in the back yard. These have been reclaimed and reused to build a planter area in the back yard. Inside the home, another piece of reclaimed history sits in the living room. Lovingly displayed is a piano dating from 1854. Jillian, who was trained as a musician, salvaged the antique piano from a house on Whitney Avenue before the owner threw it away.

The Sawyers trace their attraction to the Cathedral Area to their love for the style and character of the older homes in the garden district of New Orleans. Along with a thoughtful décor, you will notice several pictures of Joliet’s architecture and history inside this beautiful home.
