CAPA
Housewalk
CAPA's 24th Annual "This Olde Housewalk" will take
place on Sunday, June 24th 2007. The following serves as an update
regarding all the exciting things that are taking place in preparation
for what is sure to be a wonderful event! It also outlines some
of the ways that you can help. After all, this event wouldn't
be possible without two very important groups: the homeowners
and the volunteers!

Porch Lunches
One of the most popular aspects of the Housewalk is porch lunches.
We always have more requests for reservations than we are able
to accommodate. So we can use your help! Hosting a lunch is relatively
easy. You need a porch, patio or deck that can accommodate two
or more guests. You provide the table settings and drinks and
the food is delivered to you by the Jacob Henry Mansion staff.
It's a wonderful way to be a part of the Housewalk and it presents
our neighborhood in a very gracious and unique way. If you are
interested in hosting a lunch, please call the CAPA phone line
at 726-4163 and leave your name and phone number. Our Porch Luncheon Coordinator will give you a call and answer
any of your questions or concerns.
Volunteers Needed
On the day of the walk our neighborhood is host to hundreds of guests. It takes many volunteers, working numerous hours to insure a successful and enjoyable day for everyone. In order to increase our volunteer base and to insure that volunteers who work the entire day of the walk get a chance to view the homes, we are revamping our Preview Night. Preview Night tickets will be issued to those people who are working the entire day of the walk. For example, if you host two porch lunch seatings, or volunteer as a room watcher for two shifts, or work a shift at the park and a shift in one of the homes, you will be able to preview the homes on Saturday evening. We will have more information about this as the time draws closer. To volunteer, please call the CAPA phone line (815) 726-4163, or our volunteer coordinator, Kimberly Denson at work, (815) 724-0887 or home, (815) 727-2286.
Future Walks
We also are starting our search for next year's homes, so if you
are thinking about opening your home or are asked to share your
home with us please consider being part of the experience. If
you speak to any one of us who has opened our homes in the past
you will find that it is a positive and enjoyable experience.
Please remember, too, that our ticket purchasers are not looking
for perfection. They come to see a home that is unique, comfortable,
and reflects the interests and tastes of its owner. To volunteer
your home for future walks, please call John Kella at (815) 722-9052.
Housewalk Perennial Plant Sale
The following is a message from Cynthia Wright, coordinator of
the Housewalk erennial Plant Sale. This year CAPA will once again
have a perennial sale at the Housewalk on June 25th. We are asking
anyone who enjoys raising perennials to please share their bounty
with CAPA. Here's what to do:
1.The time to dig your perennials for the sale is
when they are small. This way they will have time to recover in
their new pot before the sale. If dug when they are near full
size, they will probably live, but will droop and not look as
healthy on the day of the Housewalk.
2. Put them in a medium disposable pot with adequate
soil.
3. Use a popsicle type stick and label them with
the common name and whether they like sun or shade and if they
flower. If you have a picture of what the mature plant ill look
like, including it would be great.
4. Bring them the day of the Housewalk to Preservation
Park. We will have a table set up near the drinking fountain where
the plants can be displayed in the shade.
5. At the end of the Housewalk, anyone who donated
a plant can have any of the unsold ones.
The CAPA area is noted for it lovely shade trees
and gardens and some of our common perennials are prized in less
lush neighborhoods. Even if you can just bring in one small but
healthy plant, it would be appreciated. Don't forget about perennial
herbs too!
